Poorams

specracular among the festivals of Kerala are the poorams held in the temples of Central Kerala. The poorams are noted for their impressive procession of caparisoned elephants and Panchavadyam, the traditional percussion ensemble. Thrissur Pooram, often referred to as the' mother of all poorams' is noted for its spectacular display of fireworks.

Boat races

The largest team sport in the world, the snake boat races of Kerala are held in connection with Onam, the harvest festival. A snake boat is usually manned by four helmsman, 25 singers and 100-125 oarsmen who row in unison to the fast rhythm of the vanchipattu (song of the boatman).

Elephant pageants

No celebration in Kerala is complete without an elephant pageant. This gentle giant is accorded the privilege of escorting the numerous gods and goddesses of this land. The elephant pageants feature colourfully decked up elephants, with mahouts atop them holding high tinselled silk parasols and swaying white tufts and peacock feather fans.
